Trail takeaways

Best moment

The first proper view from the rocks over Ilkley and the Wharfe valley.

What I would avoid

Underestimating the moor because the route is short. Weather and footing can change quickly.

Practical notes

  • Start from the Cow and Calf parking area on Hangingstone Road.
  • Expect rough, muddy, or boggy sections, especially after wet weather.
  • The moor is exposed, so take a layer even on mild days.
  • Use sturdy footwear rather than smooth-soled trainers.

Before you go

  • Check the latest weather before you set off.
  • Wear suitable walking shoes or boots for the terrain.
  • Carry enough water, especially on longer or exposed routes.
  • Take a charged phone and a backup way to navigate.
  • Pack a small first aid kit for basic cuts, blisters, or minor issues.
  • Check daylight, parking, access, and any local restrictions before walking.
  • Tell someone your route if you are heading somewhere remote or unfamiliar.

My experience

The distance is modest, but the moor gives the walk a bigger feel. The rocks, exposed paths, and wide views make it feel properly Yorkshire, especially when the wind is up.
