The Box Hill Stepping Stones Walk is one of Surrey's most iconic short walks, combining woodland trails, riverside paths, and panoramic viewpoints into a rewarding 3.2 kilometre loop. Starting near the River Mole, the route crosses the famous stepping stones before climbing to the summit of Box Hill, where far-reaching views stretch across the Surrey Hills National Landscape. It's a relatively short walk with a surprisingly steep climb, making it perfect for anyone looking for a scenic adventure without committing to a full day on the trails.

My experience
This may be one of the shortest walks I've done, but it certainly doesn't feel like one of the easiest. The route starts gently along the River Mole before reaching the famous stepping stones, which are every bit as enjoyable as I'd expected. They're one of those landmarks you've probably seen in countless photos, but crossing them in person is much more fun.
The real challenge begins immediately afterwards. The climb up Box Hill is short but steep, with hundreds of steps winding through the woodland. It definitely gets the heart rate up, but every pause to catch my breath also gave me another excuse to admire the views opening up behind me.
Once at the top, the effort is quickly forgotten. The viewpoint looks out across the Surrey Hills, with rolling countryside stretching as far as the eye can see. Despite being so close to London, it feels surprisingly peaceful.
The descent completes a lovely little loop back towards the river, making the walk feel perfectly balanced. It's the kind of route that's ideal if you're short on time but still want rewarding scenery and a bit of a workout. I can easily see why this has become one of Surrey's most popular walks.
