North Yorkshire

Cleveland Way

National Trail

The Cleveland Way begins at Helmsley, crosses the North York Moors and turns south along the Yorkshire coast to Filey Brigg. Heather moorland, wooded valleys, high sea cliffs and historic towns give the route two distinct halves.

The upland section is remote and exposed, while the coast adds repeated cliff climbs and descents. Navigation, weather and current coastal diversions deserve attention even though the trail is waymarked throughout.

Practical notes

  • Remote moorland stages have limited services and can be difficult in poor visibility.
  • Coastal sections include steep climbs, cliff edges and paths affected by erosion.
  • Check current official closures, including any temporary diversion around Robin Hood's Bay.

Before you go

  • Carry offline and paper mapping for exposed moorland stages.
  • Check coastal weather and stay back from unstable cliff edges.
  • Plan transport and accommodation around the long linear stages.
